MEDIAL | Setting up an AI Generated Video Quiz

Creating interactive, AI-generated quizzes from video content turns passive watching into active learning. Using the MEDIAL plugin inside an LMS such as Moodle, you can transform a media file into a timed, annotated quiz in minutes. This guide walks through the setup, customization, and student experience so instructors can publish engaging assessments without heavy manual question writing.

Table of Contents

Quick overview

  • Log into your LMS

and enable editing for the course page.

  • Add the MEDIAL activity

, choose or upload the media, then build a quiz.

  • Use AI

to generate questions, then edit, annotate, and publish.

  • Students

see questions appear on a timeline and receive scores that sync to the gradebook.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Add the MEDIAL activity

Turn on edit mode and select Add an activity or resource. Choose the MEDIAL plug-in and give your quiz a clear name and description so students know the objective.

  2. Choose media and create a new quiz

Scroll to choose media, click Build Quiz, and either upload a new file or pick an existing media asset. Select the correct file, then click Next.

  3. Define pre-quiz options

Type a welcome message that appears before the student begins. Configure options such as allow skip, show answers, allow review, and add a time limit. When ready, click Next to proceed to question generation.

  4. Generate questions using AI

Press Use AI and customize the output by selecting question types (for example, multiple choice or true/false), number of questions, and difficulty level. Then press Next and let the AI create an initial draft of quiz questions.

  5. Review and refine AI-generated questions

If a question is not suitable, click the trash icon and select Replace to have the AI generate a new alternative. When satisfied with the set, click Next to place questions on the timeline.

  6. Save and publish

Choose the correct course category, save the quiz, then select Save and display to make it available to students.

Customizing questions and the timeline

Once questions appear on the timeline you can fine tune them directly in the interface. Click a question and select the pen icon to edit wording or change the correct answer. Multiple choice questions allow additional edits: add your own answer options, remove poor distractors, and reorder choices to improve clarity.

Annotations let you highlight important moments in the video. Click Annotation and Add, type a short message such as this example:

question is coming up

You can also add clickable links within the timeline. For example, link back to the MEDIAL homepage or to supplemental readings and have the link open when the student reaches that point in the quiz.

Student experience and grading

Students see a welcome pop-up before the quiz starts and a visual timeline with dot markers indicating where questions will appear. Annotations and links appear inline, prompting learners to pause and reflect at key moments.

After completion, students receive immediate feedback with a score summary. The score is also recorded in the LMS gradebook so instructors can review performance alongside other course assessments.

Tips and best practices

  • Start with clear learning objectives

so the AI generates questions aligned to the intended outcomes.

  • Use a mix of question types

to assess recall and comprehension. Multiple choice and true/false are quick to auto-generate, while short answer can test deeper understanding.

  • Limit question density

so students stay focused on core moments rather than being interrupted too frequently.

  • Edit AI output

to remove ambiguities, adjust wording to match course language, and ensure distractors are plausible.

  • Annotate strategically

to cue students about transitions, examples, or key takeaways.

  • Use time limits and review settings

to match assessment intent: formative checks can allow review; summative assessments may restrict it.

  • Test the student view

by logging in as a learner to confirm pop-ups, timeline placement, and gradebook recording.

Common workflow examples

  1. Flipped classroom check

Assign a short video with five AI-generated multiple choice questions. Allow review and give immediate feedback so students come to class prepared for discussion.

  2. Formative checkpoint

Insert annotations before a challenging segment and add a single true/false question to confirm understanding. Keep the time limit short to encourage quick reflection.

  3. Summative mini-quiz

Use AI to produce a larger set of mixed-difficulty questions, manually edit to ensure rigor, then publish with limited review options and gradebook syncing enabled.

FAQ

Can I use this quiz workflow in LMS platforms other than Moodle?

Yes. While this example uses Moodle, MEDIAL integrates with many learning management systems. The exact steps for adding an activity may vary, but the core flow—select media, generate questions with AI, edit, annotate, and publish—remains the same.

How do I control the difficulty and types of questions the AI generates?

When you click Use AI, options let you select question formats such as multiple choice or true/false and set a difficulty level. Choose the number of questions and the desired difficulty before generating to guide output.

What if an AI-generated question is wrong or unclear?

You can replace any unsatisfactory question using the trash icon and selecting Replace to prompt a new AI suggestion. You can also edit questions directly with the pen icon to change wording or answers.

Where do student scores appear?

Student scores are displayed immediately after quiz completion and are recorded in the course gradebook so instructors can track performance alongside other assessments.

Can I add links and annotations inside the quiz?

Yes. Add annotations to flag important sections and insert links that open at specific timeline points. This helps direct learners to supplemental resources or the MEDIAL homepage.
