How to Set Up an AI Generated Video Quiz in MEDIAL
A video quiz is a great way to check understanding while students work through course material. With MEDIAL, you can start with a video, generate questions using AI, edit them to suit your class, and place them at points along the video timeline. When students finish, they can see their score, which also appears in the grade section of their Moodle course.
Here is the complete setup process, from adding the activity in Moodle to checking the student experience.

Start in your Moodle course
Log in to your learning management system and open the course where you want the quiz to appear. This example uses Moodle. Turn on edit mode, choose Add an activity or resource, and select the MEDIAL plugin.
Give the activity a name and enter a description in the fields provided. A clear name will help students identify the quiz on the course page, while the description gives you space to explain what the activity covers. Then scroll down to Choose media and select Build quiz.

Select the video and set up the quiz
Choose New to create a quiz. You can upload a video file or select media that is already available in MEDIAL. To use an existing file, search for it, tick the correct result, and click Next.
Next, write a welcome message. This appears before the student begins the quiz, so it is a useful place for a short introduction or instructions. You can then choose how the quiz should behave:
- Allow skip
if students should be able to move past a question.
- Show answers
if you want answers displayed during the activity.
- Allow review
if students should be able to revisit their work.
- Add a time limit
if the quiz needs to be completed within a set period.
Choose the settings that fit your activity, then click Next. It is worth deciding these options before generating questions so you can review the completed quiz with the intended student experience in mind.
Generate and review questions with AI
Now select Use AI. MEDIAL lets you choose the type and number of questions you want, including multiple choice and true or false questions. You can also select a difficulty level. Make your choices and click Next to generate the questions.
AI gives you a starting point, not a final set that you have to accept unchanged. Read through each question and check that its wording, answer, and level are right for your students. If one does not fit, select its trash icon and choose Replace. MEDIAL will generate a new question in its place.

Fine-tune questions on the timeline
The timeline shows where questions will appear as the video progresses. This is your chance to check the flow of the quiz and make any final edits before publishing.
To change a question, select it on the timeline and click the pen icon. You can edit its wording and choose a different answer. Multiple choice questions give you further control: you can add an answer of your own or remove answer options that you do not want to use.
These small edits matter. An AI generated question may cover the right idea but need a clearer phrase, or a multiple choice option may not suit the material you teach. The timeline editor lets you make those adjustments in the context of the video rather than treating the questions as a separate list.
Add annotations and links
Questions are not the only items you can place on the timeline. MEDIAL also lets you add annotations. Select Annotation, then Add, to create a message that appears during the video.
For example, an annotation saying that a question is coming up can draw attention to an important section. You can choose a bright colour for the message and adjust its position on the timeline so that it appears at the right moment.
You can also add a link. In this example, a link to the MEDIAL homepage is placed at the end of the quiz. Use the same timeline controls to check where your annotation or link appears, particularly if you want students to encounter it before or after a question.
Publish the quiz in the right place
When the questions, annotations, and links are ready, click Next. Choose the appropriate category so the quiz is published and saved in the right place, then click Save.
You will see the finished quiz back in the Moodle activity setup. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save and display. This final Moodle step makes the activity available from the course page.
Check the student experience and score
Before leaving the activity, it helps to see how it works from a student account. The welcome message appears before the quiz begins. As the video plays, students can see question points along the timeline. An annotation appears at its chosen moment, followed by the quiz question when the student reaches it.
After completing the quiz, the student sees a score. That score is also displayed in the grade section of the course page.
That final check brings the whole workflow together. You can confirm that the opening message makes sense, questions appear where you intended, annotations are timed well, and the result is visible in the course grades. With the setup complete, your video becomes an interactive quiz that students can work through as part of their Moodle course.
